I began this series of prison paintings in 2020. My practice around this project also includes teaching visual art to men and women inside Colorado state correctional facilities. I started teaching through the University of Denver Prison Arts Initiative (DUPAI) in 2021, and I now teach through Impact Arts, a volunteer program that I co-founded in 2024 with Lillian Stannard.

In 2022, I was able to exhibit several of these paintings at the State University of New York (SUNY) Fredonia, alongside work by eighteen currently and formerly incarcerated artists whom I met through DUPAI. In 2024, that exhibition, To See Inside: Art, Architecture, and Incarceration, was expanded to twenty-three artists and was hosted in Colorado by the Museum of Art Fort Collins. I am honored to have received the Marion International Fellowship for the Visual and Performing Arts in 2021 to support my work on this project. Learn more about the fellowship here.
